Dog breeds

Find out about dog breeds with our simple guides. We decided to categorise into seven key areas - which you can see below. Dog breeds vary in size, temperament, behaviour and of course function. Dog breed shows are all about judging dogs against the 'Breed Standard' (a blueprint of the perfect dog for that breed).

All 'Breed Standards' are owned by the Kennel Club, and changes will only come from them. Where there are newly recognised breeds (introduction of new dogs to the UK) the Standards are drawn up once the breed has become sufficiently established within the UK. The Kennel Club currently recognises 196 breeds.
