Alaskan Malamute

With its thick double coat, this Alaskan Malamute is a large dog that originates from the Arctic Circle region and is often used for sledging. It has a large body, a wide head and a thick tail that comes forward, over the back, usually lying along the spine. The ears on the Alaskan Malamute are medium in sized and rounded at the tips. They stand upright and are usually brown. The huge muzzle narrows slightly at the nose and the legs are muscular and heavily boned. The feet have thick pads and are generally quite large. Usually this dog is grey and black with a white under body. The double coat has a thick outer layer and with coarse hairs and the undercoat is dense.



  

Temperament :

A very friendly dog, the Alaskan Malamute are great with youngsters but are rarely used as guard dogs. They are renowned for being boisterous, affectionate and intelligent. Built for the great outdoors, these dogs have evolved into animals that can survive inside and out. It is possible to train these dogs sufficiently for obedience and with some strict handling; a good natured and well mannered dog is easy to produce.

Health issues :

Some of these fine animals are likely to develop hip problems and although this is generally occurs in no larger quantities than in most other breeds, it is still something worth considering. With a good appetite, these dogs can also sometimes become bloated very easily!

Exercise :

Due to their thick, warm coats, these dogs are likely to become overheated if they exercise too rigorously during summer months. They do, however require a fair amount of exercise to keep them fit and healthy.

Life expectancy :

They tend to live longer than most breeds and can usually survive for around 12-15 years.

Grooming :

This breed is renowned for being very clean and so constant grooming is unnecessary. With such a thick coat, it is necessary to brush them every three or four days. They also moult a lot of fur and this occurs in large amounts two or three times a year.
